Yes, a Paracas and Huacachina day trip from Lima is worth it if you do not have time for more, but it is a long day: about 3.5 to 4 hours by road each way. If you can, stay one night in Paracas or Ica and enjoy it without rushing.
Most visitors to Lima never hear about this trip until they arrive. In one route you see sea lions and seabirds on the Ballestas Islands, the desert reserve of Paracas, the dunes of the Huacachina oasis and the vineyards where pisco is made.
How the day usually works
- Very early departure from Lima, heading south along the coast.
- Morning boat tour to the Ballestas Islands from Paracas, about two hours.
- Optional visit to the Paracas National Reserve and its red and golden beaches.
- Drive to Ica, about an hour away, and a visit to a pisco winery.
- Afternoon in Huacachina: dune buggies and sandboarding, ideally at sunset.
- Return to Lima, arriving late at night.
The Ballestas Islands
Often called the “poor man’s Galápagos”, the islands are home to sea lions, Humboldt penguins and thousands of seabirds. Boats do not land on the islands, which are a protected area, but they get close enough for great views. On the way you also pass the Candelabro, a giant figure drawn on the sandy hillside.
Boat tours usually run in the morning, when the sea is calmer. Wind tends to pick up in the afternoon in Paracas, which is why tours avoid that time.
Huacachina and Ica
Huacachina is a small lagoon surrounded by huge sand dunes, just outside the city of Ica. Riding a dune buggy and trying sandboarding there at sunset is one of the most fun things to do in Peru. Ica is also the heart of pisco country, and many wineries offer tastings.

Day trip or overnight?
- Day trip: best if you only have one free day in Lima. Expect a 14 to 16 hour day.
- One night in Paracas or Ica: a much more relaxed rhythm, time for the reserve, the wineries and the dunes at sunset.
- Private tour: ideal for families and groups of friends, since you set the pace and the stops.
Tips for the trip
- Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat: the desert sun is strong all year.
- Take a light jacket for the boat in the morning.
- Wear closed shoes or sandals you do not mind filling with sand in Huacachina.
- If you are prone to motion sickness, the boat and the buggies can be bumpy.
